Hollis Walker

Biography

Hollis Walker is a veteran professional journalist who has written more than a thousand articles and essays for national and regional media. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism and has won dozens of national and regional awards for her writing and editing. Walker has also worked in radio and as an art curator and gallery director.
At age 52, she returned to school to become an interfaith minister, and subsequently trained for a year as a chaplain in a California hospital, working primarily with the critically ill and dying. She has also worked with patients in hospice and nursing home settings. Soon after she completed her clinical training she was diagnosed with cancer.
The Booby Blog: A Cancer Chronicle is based on a blog she wrote during her illness and entries from the cancer journal she kept during that time. She wrote the book with the intention of helping others with breast cancer or other life-threatening illnesses and their loved ones understand the essential spiritual lessons that being sick offers to everyone involved. Her experience as a journalist and as a patient make her uniquely qualified to communicate with others about what it’s like to have cancer, how the medical establishment helps and hinders our recovery, and how we must take responsibility for our own healing.
A native of Okinawa and a military brat, Walker has claimed Santa Fe, N.M., as her hometown since 1987. She combines her passion for spiritual ministry with her writing and editing skills. Walker runs women’s groups and writing groups, offers individual spiritual counseling, and continues to write for publication and edit others’ writing. She often performs life rituals such as weddings and is a guest speaker at area churches. She volunteers as a chaplain at an interfaith homeless shelter.
