Marilyn was first published at the age of nine in a poetry anthology, and has been writing ever since. As a young adult and teenager, she trained as a dancer spending years training as a ballet dancer and in the Martha Graham technique. She was the youngest person ever admitted to Toronto's prestigious School of the Toronto Dance Theater, and she danced professionally in Toronto before attending the University of Toronto at eighteen, where she graduated with a Double Major in History and Sociology.
Marilyn has won various awards for her screenplays, notably the Audience Choice Award at the Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto for her romantic comedy (co-written with Isabel Thomas), Brazilian Wax. She was one of eight participants that year selected for the NALIP story development workshop with a CBS Script Analyst and an established L.A. based Producer. She is also a past NALIP Writer's Lab Fellow (sponsored by Twentieth Century Fox, HBO, The Writer's Guild of America, and Time Warner) and is grateful to be mentored by industry professionals, including Academy Award Nominees, Script Analysts and Producers. In addition, she has also worked as a writer for hire for L.A. based producers, and has had screenplays under option. She's grateful for her Second City Improv training in Toronto for polishing her comedic writing skills.
Her first YA novel, Stargazing from Nowhere, was originally a screenplay written by Marilyn and her sister, Isabel Thomas. (Their real surnames are Duarte, but they've chosen to use their middle name Thomas for their Young Adult and Chick Lit series). They felt that this story would lend itself to a YA series, so the novel idea was born. She has taught High School Social Studies for several years, where she's had a first hand view and involvement in teen culture, and is grateful for the steady stream of readers who are always happy to provide feedback on current teen trends, dialogue and life to help make her YA work authentic to today's teens.
Marilyn is also a member of the Dramatists Guild of America, Inc., the Playwright's Guild of Canada, and Toronto Women in Film (WIFT)
She also completed Canisius College in Buffalo, NY for Teacher Certification in Intermediate and Secondary and received additional Social Studies and Librarian Qualifications from the Ontario Institute of Education.
She is busy at work on her next project.
