Cultivating Despair

Creepy AF. The bad guy isn't some mindless killing machine, and he isn't driven by some pat mistreatment by mommy. You see him dealing with rules he has to follow, almost childlike with his friend. That makes him human and even more frightening. When he's roaming around peoples' houses while they aren't there like that's an everyday thing or hiding under the bed while the woman is in the room, that's way more creepy than any monster. Yeah.

I've read other novels from this author. I like how this and other stories don't follow predictable patterns. In a disaster story, you expect problems, but you don't expect monsters, and you certainly don't expect some of the people to be worse than the monsters. In a monster story, you don't expect earthquakes and avalanches. This story merged the two well. I highly recommend this novel.

I liked it. From the scenes jumping around the world to those contrasting the inexperience of the two women, you know the story won't follow the typical pattern for a murder investigation. The mystery unfolds not because of the authorities, but because of the doggedness of the two women.
