Jan Koutsky teaches digital fine art at a college in Seattle. "My Grandma, My Pen Pal" was inspired by her children's first grade teacher. The students were encouraged to write to important elders in their lives. When the teacher sent home a note to the parents about the project, Jan immediately saw this book in her imagination. She just had to decide to create it. The drawings, stationary and stamps took a year to create, but it was worth it. Jan was pleased when it won the "Teacher's Choice Award", and the book found its way back into the classroom. Jan lives with her family in Seattle.
A grandmother and grandchild develop a strong bond through letters and visits. The loving relationship is recorded in this scrap book style memoir. "My Grandma, "My Pen Pal" won the Teacher's Choice Award from the International Reading Association for its ability to inspire writing between generations of family members.
