The "Id has landed in Park Slope"!! Vincent Caruso's "The Space" confronts the lucky reader with a chance to go on a journey with a first person protagonist who may not be very likeable at times, but is all too human to those who care to look deeply enough. And our protagonist-Tony-proudly points a middle finger to the gentrification of "Park Slope" (which I am told was just called "South Brooklyn" before the money and pretension moved in) by the yuppie zombie horde of the apocalypse and doesn't seem to give a F!@# who sees him do it! Id is the part of The Self under our Ego, where our shadows lie. Our addictions. The parts of us we would rather not have others (or ourself) see so readily. Our story teller-Tony Mario Russo-lives his Id out fully. Which makes him completely insufferable. Yet truly endears him when he struggles to do the right thing, often in spite of himself. The wonderfully vivid circle of friends that Mr. Caruso has created to surround Tony is the best part of "The Space", and what gives Tony life. They make Tony get up from his "Suicide Sundays" when his addictions have laid him down low. Certain friends-beautiful lost soul Nick and esp the glorious drag queen Michael-will resonate long after the last page is finished and that is a testimony to Mr. Caruso's talent for character and how people just try to love each other on a page, you know? Just try to love each other on a freakin' page. To experience that was well worth the journey through Tony's bizarre, sometimes frightening and often hilarious bedroom antics-whatever your sexual proclivities might be. And that was what Tony hopefully comes away with as his quite fragile world is shattered at the end and he walks out into his still beloved Brooklyn-a bit broken, but still strong. I do hope Mr. Caruso takes us on some more journeys through some fabulous characters again soon. I mean-who doesn't LOVE to put on a pair of strawberry pumps over some new hose and do his/her best rendition of "Don't Rain on My Parade"? Mr. Caruso-get writing again! This world needs some more of the kind of love that you can give, sir. And a few good "flips of the bird" are always more than welcome, too.
