K T Bowes

The first time K T Bowes won a writing competition she was six and the sound of the applause as she went up on stage stayed with her for at least half an hour. Then when they presented her with a Jaffa biscuit as a prize the shine wore off and she palmed it off on her baby sister after school. She wrote in her teenage years because the local paper paid money to kids for stories and she subsidised her role as sales assistant in a chip shop with her writing. Married with four children, her work history includes a variety of roles from law enforcement officer to chief pot and bottle washer in a hospital. She gained a drawer full of diplomas and certificates over the years for her numerous jobs but the most unused one was an honours degree in English.

Eleven years ago after getting on a plane with a rucksack, a suitcase and a one way ticket to New Zealand with her family, K T Bowes dusted off her degree certificate and began to write again.Seven years later and she'd produced three novels which were published first on the book site which must not be named here. A few years on and she's an international best seller with nineteen books published under the Hakarimata Press label and available in most online retailers.

K T Bowes is still in New Zealand and still married, but the four children she crossed the world with have all grown up and started doing incredible things of their own. Now in their twenties, they all seem to be stuck in the tertiary system as eternal students but one day they might find their way out - although they aren't currently looking for the exit. She visits them there regularly and sends food parcels and money.

She used to horse ride but kept falling off and breaking bones so now stays almost safely on the treadmill - almost safely because she has fallen off that too. Her constant writing companion is a ginger cat called Nahla who sleeps in her desk drawer and follows her everywhere, begging for her picture to go on Twitter.

Smashwords Interview

Who are your favorite authors?
My most favourite author is MM Kaye, who wrote 'The Far Pavilions'. I have read other work by her, but that novel stands out the most in my memory because although it was fiction, it was built from her own life experiences. It had such a ring of truism that it was eerie. It was huge and took a whole month to read but I really didn't want it to finish. I also love Rebecca Shaw's 'Village Series' and Earlene Fowler's 'Benni Harper Mysteries'. I am an avid reader and will read absolutely anything, from instructions to the backs of shampoo bottles when I get very desperate. I often have a few books on the go at once in different rooms but when I find one that I love, I will carry it everywhere with me just in case I get a few moments down time. I'm not satisfied until I have completely devoured it.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Sometimes I actually don't want to get up. I work and have a family as well as writing. I get up early and go for a run or a blast on my exercise bike - although I have recently rigged up a way of reading my Kindle on the bike. I believe in a forgiving God, which is just as well as I am always doing things wrong, but I have seen how fragile and precious life is. I try to do at least one nice thing for someone a day and that is definitely worth getting up for. Once a day doesn't sound a lot, but it's easy to get to the end of the day and realise I didn't do it, or that I just got too busy in my own stuff and didn't even notice a need. My faith has carried me through a lot of hard circumstances.

Smashwords book reviews by K T Bowes

  • Wrath, Prequel to Tredan's Bane on June 13, 2015

Wrath is enough of a hook to make you buy the first in the series, entitled Tredan’s Bane. It sets the scene as a man is taken prisoner in a hideously violent kidnap. It gives you an insight into Tredan and what his Bane actually is and it offers another viewpoint before the action begins in the first novel. It is well worth reading and is enough to make you go on and grab the series.
  • Welcome to Hell on June 13, 2015

I tend to stick to authors I like and Demelza Carlton is one of them. I won’t be happy until I’ve read everything she has produced. There is something so skilful about the way she writes, which is at the same time raw and humorous. Mel is my kind of girl. I entered the novel thinking that the job interview scenario was real, forgetting that the title was ‘Welcome to Hell,’ and was lured into this peculiar world like a lamb to the slaughter. The presence of horns and tails on the interviewing panel was genius but took me by surprise. I was disappointed when the last page came and went and wanted more. I’ve already bought the next installment. Even though I knew that the work was a short story before I began reading, the characterisation was amazing. Mel is plucky, brave, unfazed by the bizarre presence of demons at her job interview and also immensely entertaining. I read the ‘briefcase up the bum’ incident on Demelza Carlton’s blog and still smiled reading it again in the book. Lucifer already reminds me of a manager I once had, all powerful, slightly menacing and incredibly lecherous. I can’t wait to see what antics he gets up to. There is something about the way that Demelza Carlton writes that is so subtly tongue in cheek; it gets me every time. It doesn’t seem to matter what sort of emotion the scene demands, she manages to make the reader dance to the author’s tune effortlessly. I’ve never read a series about angels and demons portrayed in this way. It’s really different. The word ‘black comedy’ springs to mind but as always, Carlton is in a league of her own, carving out her own route and mesmerising the reader with her colourful, well-drawn characterisation. Demelza Carlton is a craftswoman, a literary hypnotist and I am condemned to sinking my precious time and hard-earned cash willingly into another of her addictive series.
