Kathleen Melin writes about home schooling based on more than twelve continuous years of teaching her children at home. In addition to her experience as a parent-educator, she has taught at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, and at an arts-based charter school.
Her creative work has appeared in "Dust and Fire," "Feminist Parenting," and "A Woman's Place." She was a contributor to Eric Utne’s "Cosmo Doogood’s Urban Almanac" and a senior writer for "The Twin Cities Family Fun Guide."
If you or someone you know is considering home schooling, this book will give you an inside look at the experience. "By Heart" introduces readers to a family discovering a freer form of education complete with some joy and some struggle. Issues such as the home school decision, socialization, and the economics of co-parenting are examined in this delightful and provocative memoir.
