Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh god. Yes, I do.
It was a derivative, melodramatic fantasy styled vaguely after Mercedes Lackey. It featured a Special Noble Boy who was exquisitely beautiful, firey, and prone to getting kidnapped and chained up and so on. It was... not subtle. But then, I was seventeen.
When did you first start writing?
I was seventeen when I got bitten by my first plot bunny. I started writing it out longhand on a legal pad, and then my parents suggested I put it on the computer to make editing easier. I spent so much time typing that summer that I hurt my wrists. My writing setup was not exactly ergonomic.
The story was full of cliches and melodrama, but it was also unashamedly built around everything I was into at the time - a beautiful, misused boy getting rescued by a badass warrior girl, lots of sexual tension, everyone being queer and having crushes on everyone else. I've ditched the cliches and melodrama, but recently I've been striving to recapture that same lack of shame in my writing, that ability to channel my id raw onto the page. That's what fuels my creativity, so it's a pity that I spent so much time in the past telling myself that listening to it and being self-indulgent in what I wrote was unacceptable. I've learned now that when I indulge myself, often I'm also indulging my readers, writing exactly what they want to read.
