The Redeemed tells the story of a soldier who returns home to recuperate from battle injuries and finds himself having to fight for the lives of those he loves, against vicious enemies. This is a fast paced and very well written story that keeps you involved and on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens next. The plot moves quickly and smoothly across different locations, combining elements of conflict, depravity, loyalty, vengeance, a little romance, and a touch of humour. There is plenty of dramatic tension, military high tech, bad guy action, and good guy justice to keep you engaged in the story. The characters are interesting and well-drawn. The main character, Sam, is wounded and heroic in equal measure. He appears to have lost his way in life, yet he finds himself when he follows his heart. Harry 'the Redeemer' Callan is also a compelling character, with a complicated and murky past. A stand-out feature for me in this book is the writer's rich and perceptive imagery. His descriptions of landscapes and the sensations of military action and violence create a strong narrative energy, allowing readers to experience these elements for themselves. The Redeemer is great entertainment. Don't pass this one up if you want to enjoy a cracking good action thriller. Can't wait for the next one.
