Larry "Animal" Garner was born and raised in Colorado. An inveterate gearhead and story-teller, he has published two crime/mystery novels, D-E-D, DEAD and DED Reckoning: Vengeance takes a road trip. Animal (a nickname from his US Navy days) is also a charity fund-raiser, community organizer, and patriot.
Over the last forty-five years, he has seen much of America from the back of a motorcycle. He is currently living in the high mountains of Colorado with his wife Marcia.
What made you decide to write a book?
I have always enjoyed telling a good story, and I have been told many times that I should write the stories down in book form. As many of the stories are about things my friends and I were involved in, I was reticent about chronicling them in print.
I finally decided that it was time to try my hand at writing, so I started with a clean sheet of paper, so to speak. I utilized places, situations, and people from my past as influences for a completely fictional tale. Being able to turn the characters any direction I chose, without fear of hurting anyone's feelings or "getting it wrong" made the task easier and, at the same time, more enjoyable.
I wrote D-E-D, DEAD as something I wanted to do, with no expectations. It was simply a story I wanted to tell. Publishing was something I really didn't consider until the book was nearly complete. Friends and family started encouraging me to publish it in book form. So I learned many new things while getting the tale ready for print; and it is now a Colorado Book Awards finalist, available to anyone who wants it. Its been quite a ride!
DED Reckoning: Vengeance takes a road trip is a continuation of Hammer Thorssen's crusade against meth manufacturers and other who use and abuse young women for fun and profit. I feel it gets farther into Hammer's psyche, and it was fun to write.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have been reading since the age of five. In that time, I have read thousands of books, from Louie L'amour to Stephen King, with some classics thrown in. At this point in my life, I enjoy a very eclectic range of books. Mainly, I like books that make me think. A touch of humor, no matter how dark or quirky, is always a plus.
The "Hammer" series of novels follows protagonist Eric "Hammer" Thorssen on his quest to eradicate those who manufacture and sell meth in the community he calls home, as well as punishing those who misuse and abuse young women.
There is plenty of action, characters you won't forget, and a good dose of snarky humor.
DED Reckoning is the much-anticipated sequel to D-E-D, DEAD. This new novel follows Eric "Hammer" Thorrsen as he heads to Colorado to find a distant relative but instead finds monsters... the kind that make and sell meth while using and abusing young women hooked on their poison. Hammer and his friends hand out their brand of punishment. Snarky humor, action, and sexy shenanigans abound.
D-E-D, DEAD is the tale of a man whose conscience makes him take on his motorcycle club for their manufacture and sale of crystal meth, coupled with their use of young girls to fill their pockets with cash. He ends up running for his life. He finds some help in the Tennessee woods, and they help him finish the job. Lots of action, set in 1990 in the American South.
