Laurie Izzy

Laurie was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and has spent the last decade in a professional corporate training role for large organizations. In her spare time she volunteers as a literacy tutor for adults with learning challenges and also teaches English as a second language to newcomers to Canada.

Now residing in the spectacular Sea to Sky Corridor of the Pacific Northwest B.C., she's remains an avid kayaker, activist, and hiker. Her blog Life, Love & Other Things has been read all over the world and continues to offer anecdotal commentaries on things like the karma of shopping, oil and gas exploitation and a world without money.

Her first eBook publications, The Book of Change: A Tapestry of 21st Century Culture, is a 3-volume narrative of some of the global issues that face much of humanity: Global Finance vs. The People, Environmental Issues vs. Politics, and Loving vs. Evolving Relationships. All three books come to life and appeal to a variety of readers through suggested supplementary material from the arts: Integrated movie titles, additional literary & book references and a variety of music selections.

To paraphrase the 16th Century French philosopher and original Encyclopedia author Denis Diderot, this is Laurie's manifesto to all her readers:

"I feel compelled to collect knowledge, to bring forth to the people with whom I share the planet - so that the events and conditions I have witnessed in my lifetime will not become useless to the future generations to come; and so that our children become more aware of their importance within an ever-changing world, and at the same time become more hopeful and happy, and that I should not die without providing a service to the human race by learning, loving and passing it on."

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
I think I started writing when I was about five after I received my first diary as a gift. From there I wrote down all the lyrics to my favourite songs on the radio - line by line. Maybe that's why I have such a connection to music - it's a beautiful blend of sound and words. Someone once said, music is what feelings sound like. As such, I've included links to a variety of songs (movies and books as well) throughout each Volume to share additional perspectives about a particular subject. The music provides a soundtrack to the books and helps them come to life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Hmmmm. Aside from being rejected or ignored by over 50 Publishers? (insert grin) You know what they say. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. I figured if they didn't want to take a chance on the books, then I had to take a chance on myself. For those who self-publish - they've got a little more grit than the millions of un-published authors who gave up based on third-party opinions. For every book, there is a reader, even if it's only one. If your words need to get out there - they will find a way.

My goal for Volume 3 is to explore the world of modern human relationships to see what can be learned through a variety of examples. I believe we are capable of compassionate, loving relationships regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or social class even though the human species is currently in a state of disrepair and indifference when it comes to how we treat one another.

We cannot expect environmental change if we are not willing to make the necessary sacrifices to ignite a complete paradigm shift - which is to move from a culture of consumption to a culture of conservation. Knowing the truth is part of the solution to a healthier planet. The rest of the solution lies within every one of you - to change, or not to change. That is the question.
