When did you first start writing?
The first "book" I did was a story I wrote and illustrated about a squirrel that lived in our backyard. I had named him "Chipper". That was either in kindergarten or grade one.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I currently have numerous books with publishing contracts.
1. Night Noises - Sam is afraid of the dark and all the noises at night are keeping him anxious and awake. One by one his family attempts to help him get to sleep. Then his sister Junie has a great idea and gives him her beloved teddy bear. Release date December 1, 2016
2. Sparkle the Elf - A young elf girl needs to learn to look inwards to find her self-confidence and self-esteem, triggering her inner "sparkle"
3. I'm Running Away! - There's a new baby in Sam's family and no one is paying him any attention. So he decides to run away!
4. Gimli the Goblin - A goblin and blind boy become friends at the playground and demonstrate to other children how to see past differences and accommodate someone with a disability so everyone can play
5. One BIG Family - Sam's family is diverse with members of different races, one with a disability and other differences. Sam's family is held together by love and in Sam's family, there is always room for one more as his new foster brother is about to learn.
6. God's Littlest Angels: Talking to Young Children about Miscarriage - Years ago I had to struggle in explaining to my daughter why our baby would not be coming home. This story is meant as a gentle tool to help young children understand and provide comfort to families going through this difficult time
7. Hair, Hair, Everywhere! - This story touches on family dynamics (tension between Mom and Grandma over decision-making for the children) and demonstrates how to use humour to diffuse conflict. All the while, it wraps the amusing story around an issue children deal with every day - the status of their hair!
8. Twinkle the Elf - Twinkle wants to do everything her older sister Sparkle does! It ends in a "feel good moment" when Sparkle explains that Twinkle doesn’t need to copy anyone because she is special - as herself.
9. Mommy Doll Day! - This is a fun story about a Mother keeping her promise to let her child select her clothing, with amusing results and a gender equity twist at the end
10. Sam and the Bully –This is a gentle way to encourage young children to talk about bullying, whether they are the bully or the child being bullied. Readers start off sympathetic to Sam for having a bully in his class and then we are surprised to find out that the bully is - Sam!
11. BALLS – This is an easy to read book that will appeal to young beginning readers (age 4-7yrs) because not only does it use sight words children will relate to, it also tells an interesting tale of how various balls are moving and offers a safety message telling children never to follow a ball onto the street!
12. Cat – This story for very young children (0-4 years) uses simple language to describe life in the day of a cat. It builds vocabulary, teaches directionality and entertains.
13. CATS – This book builds early language skills for 0-4 year olds, by describing colours, size, locations and emotions. It ends with "party cats" to bring some silliness and amusement. It is similar in style to Sandra Boynton’s books.
14. Cats in The Hall – Is aimed at 2-6 year olds. It teaches early readers Dolch sight words, colours, counting, words for physical movements, and the social skills of repentance and forgiveness.
15. Jack and His Cats – This book has with simple dialogue and basic rhyming words. It also demonstrates the importance of labeling belongings, completing chores (cooking) and good citizenship in the search to return the cats. It is aimed at 2-6 year olds.
16. The Monster Who Ate All of the Colours – Yes, this story teaches young children their colours but more importantly, it promotes the value of sharing, the importance of having sensitivity to others’ feelings and having awareness that our actions do affect others.
17. Bumble Bear - Bumble Bear is of mixed race; half bear and half bumble bee. He attempts to fit into groups at school but struggles with feelings of being in-between. This story demonstrates how children can embrace their uniqueness and work together to overcome bullying.
