  • Feasting and Fasting - What Works, What Doesn’t, and Why on April 27, 2018

This book is timely for me. My husband and I have recently committed our family to clean eating, starting with eliminating sugar and white flour from our diets, trying to add better nutrition overall, complemented by more exercise. Physically, our health was beginning to take a turn, and in just one month, most of those symptoms have disappeared with our new healthy lifestyle -- blood pressure down, sleep apnea gone, and of course, a drop in weight, but mostly just feeling really good and having lots of energy. So, I really appreciate that the book is a short read packed with great information on a topic not touched in today's churches. How can we minister in our families, in our churches, and in our communities if we're sick and run down all the time, addicted to food and caffeine and other stimulants? Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit that not many Christians have, especially in the area of food and drink. We've made idols of these things, and it's taboo to even approach the subject of gluttony. Fasting is a controversial topic -- most will agree a one-day fast is fine, though you go any longer and now you're supposedly doing the body harm. A three-week fast? Inconceivable! Worse, once one starts talking about fasting -- "Legalism!" So I think this book is greatly needed right now. I especially like the way Shane presents the overall topic from a biblical worldview. There's good information out there, but much from an evolutionary view, so it can be like walking among land mines. He keeps bringing it back to the main point (or person) -- God. The fact that it's free is awesome as well. :)
