An independent author, my first releases were two workbooks on residential childcare management, based upon my decade-plus spent in the industry. I also have published books on CV writing, and on emarketing for small businesses.
My main writing passion is for sci-fi and horror. My first fiction, a collection of fourteen sci-fi short stories, was released to strong reviews in early 2015. Set in the not-too-distant future it deals with the many realities experienced by the protagonists as they try to work out what is real, what isn't and what it means to be 'alive'.
My horror series "The Tor" was released in three novellas and one short story over the course of 2015/16 to excellent feedback. Due to reader demand I was compelled to release all four stories in one edition as "The Complete Tor" in March 2016. This omnibus edition also contains an exclusive bonus story.
Over the course of a varied and interesting career I have been a teacher, care worker, care manager, trainer and freelance copywriter.
I live in the Forest of Dean with my wife and two young children.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1984 - a powerful novel and increasingly relevant. Who's watching you? Who controls the media you consume? Of course, 'Fahrenheit' 451 goes hand-in-hand with this, as does 'Brave New World'. Of Mice And Men - it describes perfectly the plight of the working poor of the time, but still resonates today. Three To See The King - it's the perfect modern fable. It asks who you follow and why; and asks why you can't be content the way you are. Song of Ice and Fire series - it has intricate plotting, excellent characters and is always surprising. A fifth novel? I don't know... there are so many from my childhood that I could choose: the fantasy world of CS Lewis, perhaps; or the often brutal punishments meted out by Roald Dahl to his characters; maybe 'The Ghost of Thomas Kempe'. Or, moving back to my adulthood, Neil Gaiman's 'Neverwhere'. Or what about a graphic novel? Gaiman's 'Sandman' series is rightly regarded as a classic for its multi-layered, labyrinthine narrative. 'Watchmen' is also a work of great art with great characters and plotting. Of course, I seem to have overlooked my sci-fi influences here. '2001: a Space Odyssey'; 'The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy'... I could go on; but I won't. But I will mention 'American Pyscho' as well.
