This is the first book I've read by the author and I have to say I enjoyed it very much. Dianne is the main character. She gave up a good job and a life she loved to follow her partner back to Texas. What she doesn't find out until she gets there is that her girlfriend, who was out and proud in L.A., is deeply closeted where her fundamentalist Christian parents are concerned. Dianne gets to the point where she can't take the situation any longer and splits with the girlfriend. Then things get worse. She looses her job and is working as a waitress in a bar and living in a trailer park when the story opens. Dianne, with the assistance of friends and family, decides to get out of Texas and heads home to touch base with her roots. She has wonderful parents(the quintessential hippie couple) who allow her the space and time to heal. They also have a boarder, in one of the tepees on their land (I know it sounds crazy but it works in context) who comes to be the balm to Dianne's soul. Our heroine and her girl, Reba, have some issues to overcome and they do a good job of it. They are good together and they are easy to like. This is a lovely story and shows that love can go a long way to heal damaged souls. The love of family, friends and that soulmate that we need to make our lives whole and have meaning. If you like a lot of 'Sturm und Drang' this is not the book for you. If you want a good romance you couldn't do a whole lot better. (Just one little thing. The author is from Australia and you may find a few places where the idioms are not quite as American as the characters. They make no difference to the story.)
