Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I live in a quaint neighbourhood of Windsor, Ontario, Canada called Olde Walkerville. I've been in this area for most of my life, twenty years in my current home and fifteen years in my parents who still live in the same house over fifty years now. As a child, one of the great things was a place called Willistead Manor right in the heart of the neighbourhood. It had been the summer home of Edward Walker, son of Hiram Walker who established Walkerville in 1890. My own home was one of the first, built in 1895. But I digress. After Walkerville was incorporated into the city of Windsor, Willistead Manor became the home of the public library. Less than two blocks away it was a steady retreat for me to whet my appetite to read. Over the years I read every science fiction and fantasy novel on its shelves. The surrounding grounds are a many acre park filled with century old trees, ponds and fountains. There was no place better in the world to get lost with a book.
When did you first start writing?
I started in February of 2006. It's an interesting story. My current reading habit at the time was to stop at the Chapters bookstore, buy a latte at the adjoining Starbucks, and peruse the discount racks for my favorite genres. I picked up a voluminous book that was part of a successful epic fantasy series. I think it's the sixth in the line which is now somewhere around eleven or so. It is always my habit to finish any book I start. This one was a chore. When I finished I concluded it to be one of the worst novels I had ever read. What amazed me next was the books were picked up and made into a television serial. I was flabbergasted. I reasoned if that stuff could be so successful, anybody can do this writing thing. I sat down and began work on my first novel. As they say, the rest is history.

Exhilerating! The story kept me tense the whole way through. I normally don't read horror as I prefer science fiction and fantasy but after receiving a copy of the novel it is my habit to always read all the way through and I'm glad I did. There is even a touch of sci-fi in the mix which pleased me. The story was creative and, at times, frightening, the good way a horror book should be. A number of sub-plots rounded out the novel but it is the main plot that is so riveting. I don't want to post any spoilers except to say the concept of the evil hidden in the river is a nice change from coming from underground. For fans of the horror genre, this is a must read.
