Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Raging, (and quite justified,) cynicism about the state of traditional publishing at the time of writing. I am a fierce nonconformist too, so it's probably just as well. That said, I don't have any qualms about becoming a "hybrid author" for a publisher I can work with.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Each stage of writing has its own joy. The best part is probably the fleshing out of the initial idea, though. That moment when ideas tumble forth and connect, like atoms forming compounds in a test-tube. Seeing the structure organically growing before me as questions are posed and answers are forged from the material at hand. That's when I sleep best; when the ideas are bubbling away.

I like the actual process of writing well enough. That is to say, I like it when I've written something good which still stands up a couple of months later. Although that's always tempered by those times when you look back at your work and find a load of awful, cliched dreck.
