Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Southern Indiana, and quite literally have been writing about small town life since I learned the magic of cursive back in second grade. I wrote many letters to friends and relatives, and particularly an aunt and uncle in the Los Angeles, CA area always wrote back. They told me I wrote interesting letters, when all I did was write about my little life in my little town. I suppose my aunt and uncle were my first 5-star reviewers.
Tell us about your Serendipity, Indiana series.
Serendipity is a place where unexpected things happen--good things, for the most part. Before I wrote the first story in the series, "Small Town Christmas," I knew there would be several other books to follow, and I knew who and what some of the books would be about. Before I even got that book published, my beta readers were asking about one of the minor characters, Emily, who was in a car wreck. They wanted to know what happened to her, and that led to the long process of writing "Emily's Dreams." I say long because Emily's story was quite a journey for her, and for me. Doing Emily's story second changed the story order, but sometimes you just have to be flexible. So it turns out that Serendipity's surprises aren't just for the characters, or the readers...they're also for the author. Hey, I like surprises, as long as they're happy ones!
