Rachele Malavasi

Biography

Rachele Malavasi is a scientific divulgator. She works as scientific consultant for the School of Ethical Equitation (SEE, Italy). The School applies a cognitive-relationist approach to the education of horses and places the human-horse relationship first.
She also is a researcher in horse cognition and social behaviour. She is particularly interested in the basic cognitive processes underlying horse behaviour, especially social-related skills, learning and emotions. Recently, Rachele published a paper on the Animal Cognition journal about the ability of domestic horses to build a mental action plan and to communicate intentionally with humans.

In 2014, she organized a meeting on behalf of Fondazione G.O. Ghirardi ONLUS about the cognitive skills of some animal species living close to humans. "Animal Flatmates - Deep Into their Minds" is the result of the work of some of the speakers of that meeting.

In our city, building, or even our own apartment live visible and invisible species with incredible cognitive skills: pets (dogs, cats, and reptiles kept as exotic pets), animals exploited for their meat (chickens, fish), engaged in work with humans (horses), or living in our houses unknown to the tenants (fruit flies). We provide an overview of these species’ cognitive skills and their ontogeny.
