Smashwords Interview

What do you read for pleasure?
A lot! I go to the library every week and read all sorts - non-fiction books on topics like vegetable gardening and composting, alternative medicine and healing, psychology, crafts like NZ flax weaving, vegan and raw diets and singing.
When it comes to fiction, it really depends on my mood. I like action and thriller stories (can't stand the same stories in movie format though), well written romance and erotic novels. I also love historic and culturally specific stories that immerse me in a completely different world to my own. The odd sci-fi book or fantasy world is fun to escape into too.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I lived in suburbia until the age of 11 and biked around the neighborhood a lot with friends. From 11 on I lived next to the sea - living what felt like quite far away from most of my school friends, I ended up spending a lot of time walking along the beach, in the hills or swimming. I spent a lot of time in my head and would write down my thoughts in a journal as well as put my ideas into short poems.

All that solitary time had me thinking and questioning a lot about how people live, what the purpose of life is and in general 'philosophizing' about the world around me. It was the continuation of questioning and wondering that led me to helping people as a therapist. People get so confused these days about what is right for them and how to feel satisfied in life. In a way, my writing is just an extension of the work I am already doing.
