Mark Phillips was born in Southfield, Michigan. He fell in love with the written word at an early age, devouring the Hardy Boys mysteries. After graduating to adult books, Mark's influences were: Stephen King, John Steinbeck, Kurt Vonnegut and Elmore Leonard.
Mark is the author of Beneath the Mask of Sanity and the sequel Beyond the Mask.
He lives in Livonia, Michigan with his wife and their three children.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Tough question right off the bat. I guess I would have to say:
1. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
2. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
3. The Dark Tower VII by Stephen King
4. 11/22/63 by Stephen King
5. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
All of these books contain tragedies on a large scale. Yet, each of these books contain a message of hope. They show us the darker side of the world (a world that is so often cruel to so many people) and yet they exemplify the better part of human nature. A willingness to sacrifice to make the world a better place.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read across all genres. It's mostly fiction, although there are some non-fiction books (mostly history and physics) that I do enjoy. Stephen King is still my favorite author and I read everything he publishes. I enjoy thrillers, sci-fi, horror, literary. Pretty much anything that has a good story.
