M.E. Sutton

Mary has been making up stories, and creating her own endings for other people's stories, for as long as she can remember. After ten years, she decided that making things up was far more satisfying than writing software manuals, and took the jump into fiction.

She writes the HERO'S SWORD middle-grade fantasy series as M.E. Sutton and finds a lot of inspiration in the lives of her own kids. A lifelong mystery fan, she also writes crime fiction, including THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS MYSTERIES, under the pen name Liz Milliron. Her short fiction has been published at Uppagus.com, Mystericale.com, and in LUCKY CHARMS: 12 CRIME TALES (December 2013).

Like her LAUREL HIGHLANDS characters, Mary lives in Southwestern PA (but, unfortunately, she doesn't have a dog). She is a member of Sisters in Crime.

First, let me say that this is a story about enlisted men in the British army who talk like it. So if profanity, especially the "f" word bother you, keep going. That said, the characters were well written and very believable. The action starts almost immediately and it doesn't take long for you to be drawn in. My only complaint is that just as I got into the story and eager to see what happens next, the story ended! It left me thinking, "Well NOW what?" but I suppose that's a good setup for the second book.

I was privileged to read an early draft of the opening for this story quite some time ago. I really liked it then, and I'm glad to be able to read the rest of it. Having read the author's CUTTHROAT BUSINESS novels, I was pretty sure I would like this one. It started a little slower than the CUTTHROAT BUSINESS books, but it picked up quickly enough. I would have been annoyed at Annika's constant downplaying of her looks - except that I KNOW women like that. And Nick, well, I'm a sucker for chocolate brown eyes and a set of good shoulders. The pace of the story picked up pretty quickly and I finished the second half of it in a few hours on a sick day. I figured out some things and suspected others, but there was definitely a "D'oh! Why didn't I see that coming?" moment that is particularly enjoyable when reading anything with a suspense/mystery flavor. If you like some romance and you like mystery/suspense, you'll probably like this one. I hope there are more books with Annika and Nick in the future.
