Marylee MacDonald

Biography

After earning a Master's in Creative Writing back in the 1970s, I went to work as a remodeling contractor. I loved working with my hands and seeing a room addition go from bare studs to drywalled den. You might think that construction and writing don't have much in common, but they do. Building homes and writing books both require apprenticeships. To learn a trade, you must learn the craft.

When my youngest son graduated from college, I put all my effort into learning the writing craft. I hadn't written fiction in many years, and It took me a while to feel confident about submitting my work for publication. Now, however, I have had many stories published in literary magazines. I've won the American Literary Review Fiction Prize, the Ron Rash Award, the Barry Hannah Prize, and a Gold Medal for Drama from Readers' Favorites International Book Award.

My books include BODY LANGUAGE, BONDS OF LOVE AND BLOOD, THE RUG BAZAAR, MONTPELIER TOMORROW, and THE BIG BOOK OF SMALL PRESSES AND INDEPENDENT PUBLISHERS.

Smashwords Interview

What are you working on next?
My next project is SURRENDER, a memoir about adoption, identity, and love.

My other big project is a novel called THE VERMILLION SEA. It's a book about a sixteen-year-old French art student, Noel, who was plucked out of school and sent along as a draftsman for one of the most important astronomical expeditions of the day. The year was 1769. Eighteen expeditions fanned out around the globe. Astronomers needed to answer the biggest scientific questions of the day. How far is the earth from the sun? What is the earth's diameter? My little guy, Noel, went over to Baja California. As you might imagine, he left Paris in hopes of winning fame and fortune. Would he survive the trip? Would he return with his illusions intact? Stay tuned.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without readers, we writers would be high and dry. Readers mean everything to me, and I always hope to touch the hearts of those who find their way to my books.
