When did you first start writing?
When I was in the 4th grade I had a magical teacher who loved books and had a real knack for selecting the perfect ones to read aloud to the class, those that captured our imaginations and pulled us into whatever story was being masterfully told. I remember hanging on every word and falling in love with the art that words could create. My first writing began in her class as an assignment at the end of a unit on Paul Bunyan and his amazing blue ox, Babe. We were encouraged to write an original story, a tall tale like that of Paul Bunyan. My creativity flourished as I worked fiercely on that assignment and, by the time my tale was finished, I was hooked on the process of writing. So much so that I not only continued writing stories for the remainder of that school year, I kept writing for the rest of my life. That teacher, Mrs, Alton, fanned the flame by even allowing me to read my stories to the class when they were finished. I remember well the exhilaration of taking my friends on each imaginative journey, knowing our destination, yet in no hurry to arrive. So today, even though I write non-fiction, I come to each project as a storyteller, weaving together every element of the narrative in a way that leaves bread crumbs for the reader to follow on their personal journey of discovery. My intention is to start something, to light that same fire that an inspirational teacher once sparked in me, to paint with words in such a way that each reader ends up finding herself somewhere on that colorful canvas.
For every believer who has walked away from a faith that never fed them or is wearied from simply going through the motions of an empty religion that leaves the heart unchanged, Released takes its readers on a transformative journey through the Old Testament narrative of Ruth that begins in the ancient country of Moab and leads all the way to the exquisite intimacy every soul was made to crave.
