Merri Bame

Born and raised in NW Ohio, Merri taught speech, communications, English and theatre for 16 years. An introvert, Merri first found her voice as a harmonizing singer and today sings with Someone's Daughter from Toledo. When not singing Merri enjoys camping and building bonfires. Involved with theatre, Merri expanded her educational focus while performing in and directing high school, community and college productions.

In 2000 Merri acted on the wish to help adults like herself feel good at the end of the day when she started the company, Breaking Down Barriers. At the time her business focused on communication self-management and leadership development. Today, under the name BDB Communication, Merri has the altered focus of supporting attorneys who desire speaking confidence through self-management, relationship development and presentation support.

Her clients include solo practitioners, the Columbus Bar Association, small firms, the Ohio Attorney General's Office and the Ohio Supreme Court. Helping them speak with confidence in front of an audience, in court, when networking or in meetings, she helps individuals find their voice and lights a fire under them to use it.

Smashwords Interview

What are your five favorite books, and why?
I think I will continually modify my "favorites" list because I read so much, but the top two books that make an impression on me are these:
The Little Prince - it captures my desire to never let go of the child within as well as to make good use of my time
Think and Grow Rich - reminds me that growing is a continual process
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am a small-town girl who grew up in a village of 300 folks. When sitting on our front porch of our Main Street house, I could see tractors across the street, the railroad "clanking poles" which marked the half-way mark downtown, the post office, general store and local bar.

This way of life sent me often into my head, ruminating about people and ideas instead of running around with friends. An introvert, I am one of the chattiest folks around, except that's mostly in my head. I believe we introverts have a lot to say but we tend to dismiss it or try it out in writing first. Small town life gave me much to reflect on - whether because of the beauty of nature in the area, the fear of small-town judgement, or a combination of both.
