Who are your favorite authors?
I read a lot of nonfiction as well as fiction. My favorite fiction authors include Hermann Hesse (Siddhartha), Madeleine L'Engle (Wrinkle in Time), Richard Bach (illusions), Grace Lin (Where the Mountain Meets the Moon), and Diane Frank (Blackberries in the Dream House). I also like Jan-Phillip Sendker's The Art of Hearing Heartbeats, and Chris Colfer's series Land of Stories.
For nonfiction, I like the Bhagavad-Gita, The Flow of Consciousness edited by Rhoda Orme-Johnson, The Coherence Effect by Wallace, Clark and Marcus, The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, and The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote my first story for a high school Humanities class in Illinois. It was called The Corridor. It was a story of a person traveling the corridor of life which had many doors opening out from it. Each door led to a new direction in life. The person considered which door to choose for the rest of his life. Obviously, this story mirrored my life at age 18, trying to figure out what to do next after graduation. I found that a story could focus and clarify my decisions, but that it also reflected the universal choices we all make as we evolve our life.
