For good or for ill, we live in an age when many people seem eager to play the role of "victim," moaning and wailing publicly about whatever hardship fate has dealt them. Mary Byrne Eigel, who might well have hopped on that bandwagon herself, has instead written an informative and insightful account of her own painful experience, from which she ultimately emerges victorious. She doesn't sugar-coat the hard times, but she doesn't dwell there interminably, either. (I do have to confess I had the urge to give her parents a good talking-to several times as I read, however!) Her unfailing determination to overcome her difficulties provide inspiration, encouragement and, perhaps most importantly, a roadmap to anyone struggling with long-standing health issues and a medical establishment that sometimes falls far short of providing compassionate, comprehensive care. I highly recommend this book to anyone facing such challenges, and to all of those who care for them, physicians included. Thank you, Mary, for having the courage and strength to walk back through your difficult experience so that others might learn from it!
