Nicole A. Schmidt

Biography

Nicole A. Schmidt grew up on Long Island. She moved to Maryland in 2004 to attend the University of Maryland, College Park. There she earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English. In 2011, she received a Master’s of Arts degree in Leadership in teaching from Notre Dame of Maryland University. In 2013, she received her Administrator I Certification from Bowie State University.

Her teaching career in 2007 as a long term substitute. She spent the next 5 years teaching high school students in the Prince George’s County School System. She remained at the same school until 2013, moving to Charles County. She currently teaches in the Charles County Public School System.

Nicole has always seen teaching as more than a job, more than a career; she views teaching as a divine calling. As educator, she has had the pleasure of meeting special individuals. Her hope is that she was able to make a small impact on each of their lives as they have made a huge impact on her.

She is currently living in Shenzhen, China, teaching English to children ages 3-18.

Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite author is J. California Cooper. I was inspired by her short stories as they seemed so real to me. The characters were relatable even though they lived in the country or South and I grew up in the suburbs of Long Island. I must admit that when I received her novel I was hesitant to read it. I was afraid that she would not be able to complete a full-length novel with same finesse she mastered in her short stories. Glad to report that the novel was just as wonderful as the short stories. J. California Cooper will forever be my all-time favorite author.

Gwendolyn Brooks, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
For the past seven years, the answers has been my students...in the last few months, excitement about how the day would unfold and knowing that if I was blessed to see another day, I still had a purpose to fulfill.
