Natasha Sheldon

Biography

Natasha studied Ancient History and Archaeology at Leicester and Bristol Universities in the UK. She was awarded the Arnold Wycombe Gomme prize for Ancient History and holds a BA honours in Ancient History and Archaeology and a MA in Ancient History and Historiography.

Natasha researches and writes mainly on the subjects of ancient history and archaeology. She has her own dedicated ancient history and archaeology website http://www.ancienthistoryarchaeology.com/ which is an ever growing resource for anyone studying or interested in these subjects.

She is also the archaeology feature writer at Suite101, where she has received the Editors choice award for various ancient history and archaeology articles.:

The Archaeology of Leptis Magna
The Excavation of Tintagel
The Gladiators of Pompeii
Seahenge
The Mary Rose and Tudor Life
The Raising of the Mary Rose
Underwater Archaeology
The Takla Makan Mummies

She has also received praise from her editor for her articles on Roman clothing: Roman men’s Clothing, the History of the Roman Toga, Roman women’s Clothes.

Her specialist area is Roman history. Both of her dissertations in the field of magic and religion in the Roman Empire have been published. They are: The Origins and Meaning of Roman Witchcraft and Roman Magic and Religion in Late Antiquity. Natasha is currently involved in further research in this area.

Natasha has travelled widely across Europe and the Middle East and has firsthand experience of many ancient sites-Roman and otherwise. A few examples of sites she has explored are Pompeii, Herculaneum, Rome in Italy, Leptis Magna in Libya, Jerash in Jordan and Palmyra in Syria. There are many others!

She also writes travel articles. Many of her journeys have been motivated by her studies but also by her love of exploration-at home and abroad. She loves to experience other cultures. Adventures to date include riding camels in the Sahara, visiting Tripoli and having tea with the Bedouin. Her travel articles have been published in Suite101, Italianvisits.com and Travel Thru history.

History may be her passion but it isn’t all she writes about. She also writes what can best be described as speculative fiction: reworking myths and fairytales, rewriting history, inventing her own worlds and looking beyond the veil in this one.

Natasha lives in Leicester in the UK, with her long term partner Neil and their son Marcus. When she isn’t writing or looking after Marcus, she enjoys swimming (obsessively), reading, meditating, drinking red wine, eating Middle Eastern food. Sometimes she even sleeps.
