The title of this book caught my attention immediately and when I started to read, I was pleasantly surprised. The poems cover such a vast array of subjects, you never know what you will encounter next. That is, until you read the thoughts and descriptions of the poems before you actually read them. I found this to be brilliant because I like to know what prompts a writer to write about a certain subject. I also enjoyed the pictures sprinkled throughout the book as well. It made it extra interesting. My favorite poems were "Taco,Sweet Taco", "Needed" and "Love Letter". I will be looking for other books by this author in the future.
I absolutely loved In Vain. Mavis paints the emotions of unrequited love perfectly. While reading such heart-wrenching prose, my own emotions were wreaking havoc with me, having experienced the same unrequited love at such a young age. I could feel the emotions of heartache, confusion and disappointment welling up in me as if it were yesterday. My favorite poem was 'Living Next Door To Danny'. These poems will reach into the deepest recesses of a person's heart and haunt them forever. For everyone has someone they have loved In Vain.
I really enjoyed this story but was disappointed at the shortness of it. I wanted to keep reading and find out what happened.Other than that, it is a great book. The story and characters are very well developed and the plot moves along at a good pace. I'm really looking forward to the second book in the series.
