Aversion (Book One of The Mentalist Series)

I enjoyed this novel. It starts a little slow, but Udogu quickly picks up the pace. The blooming romance between Gemma and Russ is well developed and fraught with tension as Gemma tries to keep her secret and personal lives separate. Hard to do, when the guy you're supposed to secretly help falls in love with you.
The relationship between Gemma and Russ is complex, as is the relationship between Gemma and her father, who has kept some pretty significant facts from his daughter about her past. This drama keeps tension in the story. A mysterious stranger skulking in the shadows adds danger and suspense.
Udogu could tighten up her writing a bit, but I had an easy time reading the story, especially the dialogue, and I think the YA crowd will enjoy this paranormal romance.
This book is the first in a series. During the course of the book, Gemma discovers special traits that make her unique in the Averter world, and I'm eager to see how these traits develop in future books.
