Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Northern New Jersey which is the quintessential melting pot. By the time I graduated middle school I knew how to swear in Italian, Polish and Spanish and picked up a few choice Jewish words as well. My experience with my multicultural neighbors tend to show up in my characters and, more often than not, at least one character in each story I write will originate from the New York Tri-state area.
When did you first start writing?
By the time I was 7 years old, I had been a voracious reader for years and began to grow bored with the stories written for kids like me. So I started writing stories about what I wanted to read. My first story was a cross between The Velveteen Rabbit and The Tin Soldier.
