I was born in Shreveport Louisiana with five siblings of my own. Growing up in the South at a time when having fun meant creative thinking and physical daring, the Manning siblings, much like the Culpepper clan were, and still are, as close as any family of six children can be.
Now living in Southern California, I am a singer and songwriter. Writing songs is the reason I am now an author. When writing a song, I guess like any songwriter, I realized I was actually writing a story, only set to music. I also realized that I never grew up-and-away from the fairy-tales and fantasies I read as a child. I am still very much a child at heart and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I am also a care provider for the elderly. It is another passions of mine. I'm grateful to be able to do this kind of work.
At present, I am being magically transported to that other world of the Culpeper clan as I write my second Culpepper book. Stay tuned!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
That is a very good question. I grew up in Louisiana. I had six sisters and we were very close, both in age and in friendship. We did not have a lot of money though our parents worked very hard. We did not have a lot of toys but that did not stop us from having the best times of our lives through creativity and sometimes, stupid pranks. The magical quality of our childhood inspired me as an adult. One day I was telling a friend about my childhood and she said, "You should write a book." So I took the magical feeling that has been with me throughout my life and came up with the "Culpepper clan book." The creative juices has been flowing ever since and I hope they always will.
When did you first start writing?
Oh my gosh, I first started writing when I was around twelve-years-old. It was a song. I loved the Jackson Five so much that I wrote a song that sounded too much like one of their songs. The words were mine but not the melody. Anyway, when I was in grade school, I loved to read, write, spell...anything to do with words. However I did write songs in my later years and I realized I was telling a love story with my songs, however, the child in me wanted to tell bigger and more exciting stories. So I stopped writing songs and began my career writing children's books; the child in me won the day. As she always should.
