I have served as a volunteer chaplain for more than twenty years at Allied Skilled Nursing in Scranton Pennsylvania. Besides several devotional books I have written 4 books about nursing home ministry. These include easy ideas for beginning a nursing home outreach, workshop training for volunteers and how to tailor your music ministry for the nursing home.
My wife Nancy and I have been married for over 43 years. Together we have two sons, six grand-sons and one grand-daughter. We both serve as assistant pastors at New Covenant Fellowship church in nearby Taylor Pennsylvania.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I began by writing poetry as a teenager though exactly which of them was my first has somewhat faded into memory. I do remember constantly sending poems out and had a couple of them published.
Can you explain your own process of writing?
For me whether it becomes a poem, a song or a story everything begins with the miracle of a single thought. The work of communication begins with discovering the hidden structure of that idea. From discovery to writing is the sometime painful process of building tearing apart, and then building again a bridge to the reader.
Music may be the means by which you will be invited into a nursing home and once invited to return. Music can be the opportunity to make strangers feel welcome and give a smile to a person going through a tough time. Preparing for music ministry can be an opportunity to ask other people for help. Singing someone’s favorite hymn has the power to communicate more than a thousand sermons!
This work book is designed not just to inspire you, but to challenge you to become a “roll up your sleeves” neighbor in nursing home ministry! Over the following pages you will find some questions, some homework and suggested projects which will call you to action. If you are ready, then roll up your sleeves and let’s get to work!
