I was born in Portland, Maine and graduated from Bowdoin College. I currently live in Haverhill, Massachusetts and have three wonderful kids, Leah, William and Stephen. My debut novel, HUNTING THE KING, was published in 2008. I currently have two novels out, THE HUNTED and DEVOLUTION.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing after I took my last college exam. This was pre-computer days when I would go out by the Charles River in Boston with a notebook, several sharpened pencils and a big eraser. Once the novel was completed in the notebook, i would tap it out on a manual typewriter, trying to be as neat as possible erasing mistakes or whiting them out.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I became fascinated with the work being done by anthropologists trying to teach chimpanzees how to use human sign language. I wondered what would happen if chimpanzees in the wild were taught language. Would they ultimately abandon the skill, or would they expand on it, pass it along from generation to generation. if the latter, how would that affect chimpanzee society, and how would it reflect on our own early use of language?
