When did you first start writing?
I’ve been writing all my life mostly technical reports on education. Fortunately, I worked with some excellent and knowledgeable writers who were quick to correct any errors, in the nicest possible way, of course. I always wanted to write fiction as an avid reader myself. Sitting on airplanes or in an airport lounge wondering when that flight will ever come, I read a variety of books. The advent of the electronic reader meant that I was never short of something to read on a long flight.
It was here that I read some stunning fiction and, I’m sorry to say, some pretty awful stuff. This gave me the impetus to write my own novels.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the north of England near to Liverpool but most of my life has been in London and latterly Germany where I spent ten years and now the beautiful south of France where I live and write and maintain an unruly garden....
For my work in education I travelled the world. Dagmar Johnson was conceived on on my travels sitting in airports and on planes.
Dagmar’s character is a combination of many of the fiesty women I have known in my life although she is really quite soft and vulnerable behind her foul mouth.
