Instead of boring you with a bunch of dull background info, how about if I mention a few films, singers/musicians and books/authors I have enjoyed over the years. A recent discovery for me, that I can't seem to get enough of, would have to be KBass and Farafina Musiki, and their innovative blend of Reggae, Afro-Pop, and several traditional African styles. The music is positive, upbeat. When a performer/band puts out love, well, you can't help but love them back. I'm a Presley fan from way back; James Brown, Carmen McRae, Eva Cassidy, Stones, & the Doors are also favorites.
When it comes to the short story, Charles Bukowski is second to none. Even better than Hemingway, in my humble opinion. Some novels that rate high on my list: A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole; Hunger by Knut Hamsun; They Don't Dance Much by James Ross; Hating Olivia by Mark SaFranko; Mooch by Dan Fante; Post Office by Charles Bukowski; The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath; the great plays of Eugene O'Neill like Iceman Cometh, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Touch of the Poet; Journey to the End of the Night by Ferdinand Celine (second funniest novel after Dunces; not to be confused by the O'Neill play); The Stranger by Albert Camus; Double Indemnity by James M. Cain; Postman Only Rings Twice, also by Cain; James Crumley's PI novel entitled The Last Good Kiss; On Writing by Stephen King; horror writer Jack Ketchum; Poe; The Reader by Bernhard Schlink; Nobody's Angel by Jack Clark; The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester, et al. Filmmakers: Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai; Ihiru; Yojimbo); John Ford (almost anything by him), John Huston (Fat City, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, & many others); horror flicks: William Lustig's and Joe Spinnell's (original) Maniac; original Night of the Living Dead; original Texas Chainsaw Massacre; original When a Stranger Calls; Truffaut's The 400 Blows; Chabrol's The Butcher; Friedkin's the Exorcist; Bresson's A Man Escaped; the Japanese Zatoichi films; Ozu's Tokyo Story. . .and many, many other books, films and jazz musicians like Stan Getz, Paul Desmond; singers like the incomparable Sarah Vaughan, Kelly Flint, Nana Mouskouri, Il Volo, Don McLean, Al Green, Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins. . .
