Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yeah!! It was titled 'Why Babies can't talk'. I wrote it when I was nine. Although my mother narrated it to me. It was about an artificial reason that made babies unable to talk and to bring out that whitish substance that looked like a vomit whenever they wanted to talk. *laughs. I edited it until I was fourteen. I still have the manuscript.
What is your writing process?
First I get an inspiration about a topic from an occurrence, an experience, an observation or just from nature. I get a strong urge to make a story line out of it. If it is a societal issue, the urge would be to propel people to action to change it. Then I start by just putting down whatever comes to mind. I always always sleep over the draft and come to it over a couple of days or weeks. Then I start trying to make sure the draft especially the words and the sentences make sense. I never rush my writing. Sometimes I even merge my work from two different books into the one it would suit just fine. I use a technique called the three big edits when the manuscript is done if it is a major work. Then I research to make sure the information disseminated is correct so that it becomes an educative piece too. For instance, in 'Unwholesome Past', I had to undergo medical research into the sort of illnesses that some of the characters had. I know I am done when I thoroughly enjoy the work. This enjoyment extends to each and every word.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It should be adapted into a movie! Suspenseful, fast-paced and intriguing. I could not drop the book. Good work Shea Ballard. Hope to read more from you.
