The story is set in France and the opening chapters make use of french words and phrases which are well delivered in a melange of french and english. "Ah merci Jéhenne, mon Dieu it's as cold as the grave today." The names of places such as Nontron and Brantôme added colour as I know the area. This french flavour faded as the story progressed which was a shame. Although the story is based on an old theme of vampires, witches and may other creatures the author was able to work in imaginative new ideas that I thought worked well.
For me the end could have been stronger/more believable. The taster of the second book presents familiar characters that instantly had me wanting to know more. More french please.
