  I’ll start by saying that this isn’t a typical love story, but it’s a love story all the same. Godgluck manages to transcend--and defy--the expectations of what romance is, and he does it with such artful skill that I found my breath taken away more than once. These characters are flawed, each and every one, and they are beautiful for the marks and scars life has left upon them. Their struggles define them and their relationships with other people, and in some cases it leaves them stronger. In others, it threatens to shatter them. Many authors seek to almost exalt every single one of their characters. Their flaws are hidden rather than highlighted, and I think that in most cases, this leads to cases of missed opportunities. Godgluck goes for it, and he goes for it so aggressively that I found myself loving every single one of the characters. Let me say that again, because that’s astounding to me: I loved every character. From the best of them to the worst of them, they were well-crafted, fleshed out, damaged, and spectacular for it. Every. Single. One. Is it dark? Absolutely. Will it offend people? Of course. There are themes here that are bound to bother some, and yet, they’re rendered so evocatively that they’re a necessary part of the story. The language is harsh and real, and it feels more genuine for it. Oh, and the sex scenes are hot as hell. I’m usually skeptical of insta-love situations, but if every author wrote them as well as this, I’d be thoroughly hooked on the--for lack of a better word--trope. It makes sense and it comes together well, and every word is another step in that particular journey that drives it home that much more. “Even a villain deserves a chance at love,” he writes, and I’ve never seen this expressed more beautifully. This book reached me on a personal level, and it was heartening to see someone truly broken able to recognize that and find something worthwhile...and for someone to give him that chance. If I had to have one complaint, it was the epilogue; I’m not a huge fan of them in general. I liked the first part of it a great deal, but I don’t particularly enjoy when it devolves into summary. It doesn’t matter. It took me almost a week to even start to put this review together, and I know I’ll read this again and again. ...Oh, and did I mention it's free? I'm astounded by the author's sheer generosity and willingness to share something like this just to draw us into his world, but it absolutely worked. I'm hooked, and there's no getting out of this trap.
