Smashwords Interview

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Sleeping. Eating chocolate. Watching old sf shows. Reading. Oh, and attending the Eye Clinic.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not really, I started writing stuff when I was about 8 or 9. I had an English teacher called Mr Lewis, he was quite an old fella as he'd been at the school teaching some of my older siblings so he was pretty long in the tooth but he was a really positive influence as he let me write whatever I wanted.
I recall one of the oldest things I wrote being a time travel story where I was the hero but I died at the end after I was burnt at the stake for being a witch.

  • Bucketheads on May 12, 2011

Kinda odd but in a good way, your initial description of the robots makes them sound like The Iron Man (by Ted Hughes). It peters out at the end like you ran out of ideas, I would have liked it to have been longer. Good read though.

before publishing this you might want to learn how to add linespaces between paragraphs. in its current state its an unreadable clusterfuck of an ebook. and thats being polite. fix it.
  • EarthStar: A Steampunk Space Opera - Prelude on July 20, 2011

The story itself is good enough but its spoiled by the fact the author never took the time to proof read or properly format his output. Line spaces between paragraphs are an occasional after thought and there are a few spelling mistakes as well. If these minor points were fixed this would be a pretty decent release.
  • The Day I Burned The Outhouse Down on Aug. 03, 2011

I hate to be the one to point out AV fuel has an EXTREMELY high combustion point and that mere matches wouldn't set fire to it. If you'd bother to Google "if a lit match is dropped into JP-4, ignition does not occur." I now offically call bullshit!

I finished this yesterday, the start isn't great and could use a bit of work. I would have liked to have had a bit more time on Earth to learn about what caused the poisonous clouds (if its explained in the book then I clearly missed it). I guess Les read the final book in the Forever War trilogy as the sections about the Earth colony are almost identical to Haldemans book, thats not a bad thing as Haldeman is a good writer and Les has emulated him well. The endings not fantastic either, I had the feeling the return to Earth would prove more fruitful so generally the middle (founding and building the colony & working with the Aupsians) is what redeems this work. I'd look forward to reading any more of your work though Les. This was a good read.

  • One Man Army: Part One on Feb. 25, 2012

try proof reading at least 4 times before you upload, some sentences appear to have words missing so don't make sense. You should always captilize the first letter in a name (which you both do then don't, terrible habit, get out of it now!). Smashwords frowns on ppl uploaded incomplete stories. If you're gonna write something, finish it, then upload it.
  • The Recycling Kid on Feb. 27, 2012

It seems I have to rewrite my original review as the author didn't quite get my intended meaning. This a GOOD read. A VERY good read. It's detailed enough to give great imagery but because I read a lot of horror it's something I have definitely seen before. Mr Stark's work looks more like that of a professional writer. Someone who has been doing it for at least a decade & who has sold enough of his work to be able to make a decent amount of money. It does remind me of IT by Stephen King (which isn't a bad thing, it's an excellent book), but it felt too much like that piece. Some writing can be too good, and make you suspect the "writer" of not having "written" all of it. I am NOT saying that is the case here. It's more than possible to use similar situations and make them your own, I know I've done it plenty of times. Edwin seems to have a pretty good horror mindset, I think he'll do well in this genre (his cyberpunk is pretty damn good too!) and look forward to seeing more in this series. I've now read a couple of Mr Starks samples and one thing is certain, he can write very well indeed. I was surprised to discover English isn't his 1st language as this particular title is exceptionally detailed. A.I. Rebellion did display the hallmarks of someone still picking up the little nuances of the English langauge. But it did remind me William Gibson. So Mr Stark has managed to emulate 2 of my favourite authors very well. My one piece of advice for his horror town? Perhaps consider anagramming the towns name, It was immediately obvious where you were going once you said what it was called. But otherwise? Keep up the good work.
  • Yesterday, I died (The Devil's Forge) on March 27, 2012

That's a right cracking little read for such a short story. Nice Going!
  • Ménage à Moi on April 18, 2012

It makes a change to read erotica written by someone who actually does sound like they've HAD sex more than once. Unlike a lot I tend to see.
  • Socks on April 22, 2012

Instead of sticking to a thousand word limit, you should develop this into something longer. It'd be cool to see the world before, perhaps as a prologue so you can meet some the characters who go underground. Maybe learn about the bombing & the reasons behind it. develop out the quest for the library, the discovery then the search for the equipment to read it. possibly even have a few inserts from the ppl in the bunker. I reckon you have more than enough to work into a novella here. Go for it!
  • Perry's Requiem. on April 23, 2012

This isn't half bad for a short, spotted a spelling mistake though. "A raven haired mad sat up". You probably meant man? Lose that 6 at the end too. Both easily fixed though. Zombies unlike any I've read about before, impressive. More, please!

  • Survivor on Feb. 03, 2013

It's not entirely terrible. Factually you need to learn how DNA works (not the way you think it can here, go watch Blade Runner and Roy Batty talking to Eldon Tyrell near the end) and how people recycle used rifle rounds (also not the way you describe, your magnet method is totally unnecessary because there are boxes designed to catch ejected rounds). On the whole its not a bad story, gets into the idea easily enough. Worth carrying on with, maybe go twice as long next time.

Kinda reminds me of Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" which inspired the story which inspired you. Nice twist at the end and the science sounds pretty cohesive too! Oh, and thanks for all the reads & reviews. Most appreciated.

certainly needs a re-read for proofing, adding an "End of part 1" might avoid confusion when the story fizzles out to nothng.

A bit disappointing to be honest, I half expected this to be a memoir of his time but comparing it to modern times.

Tried to read both volumes of this, thinking about submitting. Reading them put me straight off. No linebreaks? What the hell is wrong with you? I know these are free but did you not want anyone reading them ever. It's just textblocks. Terrible on the eye.
