Richard S. Wheeler

Publisher info

I've published over seventy novels, most of them dealing with the American West. I've been published by Doubleday, M. Evans, Bantam, Ballantine, Forge, Fawcett, Pinnacle, Walker and Company, Sunstone Press, and Berkley.

I've written fur-trade novels, including my Skye's West series, and numerous novels about western mining. I've won six Spur Awards from Western Writers of America, which at this writing is more than any other living author. I've also written several mysteries under a pseudonym, Axel Brand. These are set in the 1940s and feature Lieutenant Joe Sonntag of the Milwaukee Police Department.

I became a novelist late in life, after years as a newsman and book editor.

Smashwords Interview

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It is heartening to see some of my old novels alive after New York publishers were done with them. Most of them were successful in print and I had sorrowed about their demise. But now, in this bright new medium, they spring back to life. I obtained reversions to about half of my historical and genre fiction, and I am gradually creating new electronic editions of these. I'm often contacted by people seeking one or another of my out-of-print novels, and now I am able to steer them to electronic editions.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I don't plot my stories. I make some character sketches, which give me some idea of the people who will populate my novels, and then I plunge them into a dilemma. I don't know the outcome when I start writing. But when I'm lucky, my characters take over the story and start telling me what they'll do next, and after that I'm less a creator of a story than a chronicler. That is a triumphant moment for me. As I write, living, realistic characters are wrestling with their difficulties, and my task is to place those dilemmas and decisions before my readers, as vividly as I can.
