Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
Pretty much as soon as I learned to hold a pencil.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New England, surrounded by trees, a short drive from the ocean. This environment created the capacity for an intense hatred of the desert. Now that I live in the desert, I use that intense hatred as inspiration to write about anything other than the desert.

Food. Alcohol. Pornography. The films of Aki Kaurismäki. These are Gordon’s addictions. He’s divorced, he’s depressed, and his dog is dead. (Of lesser concern, his career as a professor of film studies is coming to an end.) There isn’t much left of his life to ruin. That is, until the daughter he always knew he had—but never wanted to meet—comes mysteriously creeping into the picture.

Nihil’s Retina is a tragicomic roommate drama set in Outer Space. After the obliteration of Earth by a manmade black hole, the only survivors—an astronaut and his android pilot—hurtle through the void in a luxury model escape craft. A testimony of loss, madness, and conflicted cohabitation, Nihil’s Retina runs the math on the value of life after the end of the world and comes up just shy of zero.
