I liked the title of this book, I thought it worked on several levels. This book tackled themes large and small, through the character of someone who was disappointed with how his life turned out, ie everyman (and woman). I felt there were one or two plot holes and it was not clear to me why, at the start of the book, the main character and the love of his life had been apart for so long. I also thought that some events were added for dramatic tension that didn’t really make sense, and the book dragged in the middle as the author stalled on revealing more of the story. I liked the themes that the book was tackling: the things that we miss as self-absorbed teenagers; the idea that you can never go home again, because the home you go back to is not the home you left, in fact it wasn’t the home you left even when you left it; the corrosive nature of power without democracy; the way that we have one plan, and life has another; how we all have to deal with the finality of death. Good characters, interesting themes, it held my attention to the end.

I loved this book. I thought it was witty, made me laugh, great characters, good plot and the humour was really barbed, in a good way. It combined two of my favourite things, first contact stories and comedy. Loved it.
