Nothing-Ventured By: Jane Oldaker Nothing-Ventured is a warm and vibrant rendering of a story about a young woman out to prove her worth to society. Although she came from a very wealthy family, she had a falling-out with her father who thought that she could not handle what life had in store, so she set out on her own. She developed a small business utilizing her love of restoring old Victorian mansions and made quite a name for herself in the business world. As they say, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” Her father was also quite a mogul in the business world and famous for his investments and enormous wealth. While looking for investors for her development project of building a group of Victorian reproductions, Molly makes the acquaintance of Paul, who is a lawyer for an investment consortium. Love at first sight was incorporated in this charming tale including a steamy romance. Molly’s independence and fear of her own self-reliance added to the daily problems that tried to keep the lovers apart. I was gifted this novel in the hopes of a good review and I would be delighted to read it again.

Review of the Harrowed Half-Breed By: P.A. Wikoff The Harrowed Half-Breed is an intriguing tale about Barne, or Barnacle as his mother called him, who is a feathered-folk half-breed. His mother, Valara, is the ruler of the feathered-folk and she had a human lover, Lord Neff. The story begins with a human named Kip who meets Barne in a city infested with beggars and thieves. Barne relays his tragic story through the magical powers of a stone. The feathered-folk battle against the humans over their forest and Lord Neff stabs Valara in the gut while she is pregnant with Barnacle. She heals slowly but she does not lose the half-breed. Half-breeds were not allowed to live so she tries to kill it before it is born. When she sees her son for the first time, love fills her heart and she hides him from the other feathered folk for several years. Eventually the feathered folk find out about him and they banish her far away and make the half-breed child work with the other children in tunnels underground. Barne, breaks many laws and was killed by the other feathered-folk as his punishment. Meantime his mother digs a tunnel to try to get to her son and arrives just after he was killed. I do not want to spoil the rest of the story but it was excellent to read. You will find you are quickly involved with the characters and the plot. If you like magical heart-felt stories this will be an excellent original tale to let your imagination run wild.
