Roger B. Burt is a clinical psychologist who earned his Ph.D. at Duke University. In his studies he was intrigued by the mythological and cultural underpinnings of humankind. Carl Jung taught the wonder of myth from across the world. Leslie White, the father of culturology, introduced him to the “extrasomatic stream”, or culture. The work of these two men relate strongly to the struggles of humankind. Dr. Burt’s clinical studies and his understanding of the human mind deepened his interest in the development and process leading to our current crises. He feels we stand on the cusp of what we call reality and tremble on the edge of transformation or failure as a species.
What were the influences in your life that led you to become an indie fiction author?
This question made me chuckle. My life career was as a clinical psychologist and I learned most of us are not entirely clear about why we do what we do. Life is a voyage in which we sift various realities and grope for our future. I know that sounds harsh but a peaceful voyage is usually not in the cards. To focus a little—when I look at my Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy I can identify major themes in my life. The first book Gaia’s Majesty-Mission Called: Women in Power is an opening for the story and could not conceivably be comprehensive. Kind of like our childhood. Fundamentally I would identify three primary influences for me. First is my adoration of mythology which I believe speaks truth about humankind. Second is my perception that our world is entering a major transition which might lead to transformation. Third is my devotion to women’s liberation. More on this later.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Author is one thing and indie is another. As to author, I believe we enrich ourselves and the lives of others by sharing our fiction. There are ways to enrich our lives personally and collectively. The process also leads to self discovery which is never-ending. As to indie, my wife and I worked together on books about the struggles of stepfamilies. Our divorces and remarriage were eye-opening. Our first book was published by Doubleday and then the world changed. It is now so much more attractive to handle the publishing ourselves and we don’t have cases of books sitting in the garage. The independence is gratifying.
