What is your writing process?
My writing process almost always starts off with a very basic idea. Witch's Pet, for example, started with the simple idea of family. From there, I write a few pages about each character, their personalities, strengths and weaknesses, and how they would solve problems. Only after I create my characters do I start sketching a chapter by chapter outline.
Once the rough idea is there, the words start flying from my mind onto the page. I go into obsessed mode and have a hard time stopping until the story is complete and polished. It is stressful and taxing on my health, but I wouldn't change anything about my process.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I do. The very first book I read on my own was Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling. That book sculpted my entire writing style. It showed me that the most unlikely of people (or animals) can find their inner hero and that the word hero doesn't mean that a person must be physically strong. There are so many types of strength. I try to show that throughout my own books.
