Sandra Blackard

Biography

Sandra Blackard, award-winning author and parenting expert, is the Founder of Language of Listening®. She has a unique ability to help adults see the world the way children see it and make sense of what children say and do. Coupled with her gift of simplification, Sandy’s work makes complicated psychological concepts seem virtually self-evident.

Her career as a parent educator began in 1992 after she was taught to use with her own children the concepts and skills practiced by play therapists. Her mentor was Dr. Garry Landreth, Founding Director of the Center for Play Therapy, University of North Texas, Denton. Through relentlessly sharing with other parents what she had learned that allowed previously clinging Colleen to go skipping off to Kindergarten without looking back and 3-year-old Betsy to brush her teeth without a defiant, "No!" SAY WHAT YOU SEE® was born.

In the process, Sandy developed a manual for parent training that served as a model for Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) Treatment Manual (2006) which she co-authored with Drs. Landreth, Bratton, and Kellam. SAY WHAT YOU SEE® for Parents and Teachers is a 2012 NAPPA gold winner (National Parenting Publications Awards).

Sandy, her husband Patrick and their two daughters call Austin, Texas, home. She can be contacted at: www.languageoflistening.com.
