Sarah Henry

“There are only so many ideas out there, floating around in our atmosphere. At night, when some are leaking out our ears, others are falling like rain from the sky.
I once found myself surrounded by the words. They covered my feet and ankles. Tepid sentiments, for the most part, like used bathwater accumulating in a clogged drain.
And some were good, and some were useful, and some were poison. I couldn’t scoop them into my hands though, or take them anywhere useful. Too liquid to form, coalesce into anything of substance. So I lifted first one foot, then the other, in indecision. Ultimately I stood there alone, waiting.
Someday, I knew, when they were dry they could be purposed into something important. Until then I would have to be patient, waiting, breathing, being breathed, being waited upon.
And still they came, and the waters rose. There at the bottom, glinted truth, but even the most careful are fooled by perhaps. If I stood there long enough, something would surface.”
