Dan Alatorre

Biography

Dan Alatorre was born in Hamilton, Ohio, and graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. A few years later, he went on to earn an MBA from Tampa College.

Dan swears that he was just a normal guy doing normal things until he and his wife were blessed with a baby - when he was about 47 years old! Some may argue that Dan was never a normal guy, but nobody will argue that the addition of a beautiful bouncing baby girl changed his life.

Savvy’s family consists of her Mommy (Michele), her Daddy (Dan), her dog Buddy and her cat Kitty. They all live together in Lutz, Florida, on Tampa’s north border.

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
Around the time that our daughter was born 3 1/2 years ago, I was posting about it on a social media site to my friends. Stuff like, me not being admitted up to the delivery room because my wife already had too many guests up there - right after I had dropped her off at the hospital's front door to park the car! I posted about what the baby was up to - like spitting up on all of my shirts - and my friends found it funny. They thought I should write a book. After months of saying "No" to the idea, I caved in, and a lot of people thought my stuff was amusing. They saw themselves in my writing. In no time I had assembled enough writing to make a book, or several, so I published it as an eBook series.

Prior to that, though, I had done some writing in high school as co-editor or the school newspaper; but even before that, I had always written short stories for fun.

I think everybody feels like they have a book in them, and I think they are probably right. Getting the book out is the hard part. Writing it down. That's hard for most folks.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Kids are universally hilarious. Your kids, my kid, strangers' kids; it doesn't matter - kids are funny. We are all so busy that we don't have time to notice. Things happen, we smile, and we keep moving.

When my daughter was born, I happened to find a lot of what she did as amusing. By writing down notes about what happened, I could come back later and explain it so that others would understand it and find it funny, too. There are a lot of funny moments with a baby, or a toddler, or a 3 year old, and there are a lot of rare, precious moments, too.

I thought: how cool would it be if I wrote those things down; what a nice basket of memories we would have.

There are great moments like when she said her first word, that every parent can remember; there are other times when she spilled cat food all over the place, that we can laugh at now, but it wasn't very funny at the time.

How many pieces of dry dog food can float in the dog's water dish? Saying a cussword out loud to a visiting family member. Asking "Is that his BUTT?" while changing clothes at swim class. And, oh, what she announced to he gymnastics class...

It's those stories, that happen to all of us, that inspired my book.

  • Totally Amazing Spider Tales on Aug. 15, 2014

This book is exactly what you'd think - a bunch of stories about spiders! It's like reading Grimm's fairy tales but with all spider themes. Each story was unique, and all were enjoyable and well told, with some surprise endings, too! This could be some fun reading at Halloween. I enjoyed it!
  • Soul Messages: Lavish Love Notes For the Soul on Jan. 14, 2015

This book is an easy read, filled with many positive, uplifting passages. It reads almost like a daily Bible or a positive affirmation daily calendar, reminding each of us that the world is a pretty good place and that we are important in it - and that is easy to forget sometimes with the demands of work and family and all the other distractions. You are valuable, you matter, you are precious - who doesn't need to be reminded of this on occasion? Then to have each line explained in an uplifting, breezy manner, adding context and depth, makes for a very enjoyable book. Phyllis Capanna has done a terrific job of reminding us of what's important. A great gift for any Christian or anyone else!
